There is a loud roar of protest over the government providing a public option alternative to health care insurance.
Part of this protest is over the non-existent (and never was -- go to www.factcheck.org) "Death Board" inclusion in the proposed bill. Another part is that everything the government runs is FUBAR'd in short order.
The solution is for the government to:
1) Establish the minimum policy of what/how is covered.
2) Establish a fixed price for the minimum policy. The government is already doing this type of thing. Look at medicare reimbursement.
3) Require all health insurance providers provide a policy with that coverage.
4) Require all health insurance providers accept the government price for that policy.
5) Allow each person to pick their insurance provider, the government will pay the provider the established price.
Each person can pay, out of their pocket, for more or bigger coverage as an add-on policy or as a wrapper policy that still includes exactly the minimum policy.
The provider's can include more coverage in the base policy to compete but they have to accept only the fixed price from the government.
This will minimize the government's ability to screw it up. True they will have to raise taxes to pay the fixed price for everyone, but they were going to do that in some form anyway to pay for the people that can't afford it. However, for the people that are already buying insurance they will effectively transfer their payment for the minimum portion through the government instead of directly to the insurer. Their payment could go down $300 a month (if that is the number the government comes up with) and their taxes go up $320 a month plus their share for those that can't afford the minimum policy. Yes I wrote that their taxes would go up more than their policy would go down. We all know that the government is going to take some money to handle the money and they may well get a little more to stick in their fingers. But, this gives a base structure that the public can continue to fight to keep single purpose and monitor for misuse.
